Description The name “Paramithia”, meaning consolation, was given to this figure of Mary, where her sight calms and comforts the soul. According to Christian tradition, Mary of Paramithia in the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi was rescued thanks to the miraculous intervention of the particular image of the Virgin, when threatened by pirates in the early 14th century. The image of Mary is kept in the chapel of the Monastery, where the monks keep lit a vigil candle and chant prayers daily.

Silver plated icon, locally gilded.
