The painting was created in the 16th century, during the empire of Ivan IV the Terrible, and it constitutes a characteristic sample of the iconography of Christ by the Russian School. It was inspired by the first image of Christ Pantocrator, in the first half of the 6th century; the encaustic image was located in the Monastery of St. Catherine of Sinai.
