Description Born in Kursk of Russia in 1759 to wealthy and pious parents, he lost his father at the age of 4 and his mother took over his upbringing and spiritual cultivation. By the age of 10 he was saved twice, by the grace of God, from certain death. His love for God was absolute since his childhood. At the age of 19 he went to a priory in the Desert of Sarov as a cadet, under the guidance of Joseph the Elder. He provided his services in all errands studying the Bible and many patristic and ascetical books. He fled to the Desert of Sarov to become a hermit. Three years later, he fell ill with dropsy and was saved by the intervention of the Virgin. In the place of his treatment a holy temple was built with his assistance. In 1786, he was named Seraphim due to his zeal for Jesus and later on he was ordained as a deacon. Seven years later, he was appointed as a priest, without denying the strict monastic life. Saint Seraphim became known for his spiritual admonitions and his countless miracles.
