SAINT SPYRIDON

Description The protector of the poor, father of the orphans, teacher of the sinners. Saint Spyridon was born in 270 A.D. in Cyprus from a wealthy family of shepherds; an occupation he also followed despite his education. Simple, gentle, full of love for his neighbor, he was married and had a daughter named Irene. When his wife died he devoted himself to the teaching of the word of God. He was ordained Priest and from this office, with virtue and faith, he performed several miracles. During the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea of Bithynia he zealously guarded the Orthodox Faith. He died on December 12, 350 A.D. His relics were transferred from Cyprus to Constantinople in 648 A.D. and later on by his descendants to Corfu, where his relics are taken in procession four times a year.
