Description Saint John Chrysostom, Vasileios the Great, and Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, or Saint Gregory the Theologian, are known as great hierarchs and ecumenical teachers of the Orthodox Church, patrons of students and education. The Three Hierarchs have been celebrated since the mid-11th century, during the reign of Constantine IX Monomachos or Alexios I Komnenos. Their memory is celebrated on January 30 and symbolizes the Holy Trinity. It was celebrated as an educational celebration for the first time in 1842. The official institutionalization of the celebration took place much later, in 1911.
