Description According to Christian tradition, the Mother of God visited Mount Athos several times. She was also believed to have visited Mount Athos with Saint John and others by boat. During her visits the Virgin saved, through the power of her faith, monks, pilgrims, monasteries and even the mountain itself from afflictions. The icon of Mary on Mount Athos presents the Virgin as the patroness of the mountain, wearing the garment of an abbess, while standing on Mount Athos. The icon is celebrated on August 28th.
