Description Marcus, born as John, grew up with the Christian faith and its principles, due to his Christian mother Mary, a Christian from Jerusalem. He was a nephew of Barnabas (one of the first Christians who along with the twelve Apostles helped Christianity to spread) and Paul called him his son. He accompanied Paul and Barnabas on various missionary journeys. He was in Rome with Paul during his first imprisonment, and he was with Peter in Rome when he wrote his first letter. He developed missionary work in Egypt, where he founded the Church of Alexandria and attended it from 43 AD to 68 AD, until his death in martyrdom. His relics are kept in the Basilica of Saint Marcus.
