Description Saint Raphael was born in Ithaca in 1410 A.D. and given the name George Laskaris or Laskaridis. He served in the Byzantine army reaching the highest levels of hierarchy. At the age of 35 he met an ascetic and venerable elder, John, who introduced him to the word of God and the ascetic life. He became a monk; was ordained as a presbyter and was honored with the office of the dean and the chancellor. A few years after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 A.D., the Saint went to Macedonia where he became a monk, following Saint Nicholas as a disciple. The persecutions of the Christians led him to Mytilene, Lesvos where he became an abbot in the Monastery of the Birth of the Virgin. In 1463 A.D., Lesvos fell to the Turks and he died in martyrdom.
