Description Saint Barbara was born and lived in Nicomedia of Asia Minor, during the reign of Maximilian in the 3rth century AD and was known for her beauty and grace. Her father was a zealous nationalist idolater, named DIoscorus or Diosoros, who in order to protect her from suitors, deprived her of her freedom. However, he failed to deprive her of her true love to Jesus. Her father infuriated by the conversion of his daughter to Christianity, delivered her to the Roman Governor, during the era of the persecution of Christians. According to Symeon the Biographer, her father himself beheaded her but was then struck by lightning as soon as he had completed his crime. Her memory is celebrated on December 4.
